This patterned finish is generated at the fringes of the kiln or in the shadow of other pottery, where there is no direct exposure to fire and ash and items are swathed in smoke. This effect can be artificially produced by dropping in coal and burning it. The curved spout prevents soy sauce and other condiments from forming drips.
