This patterned finish is generated at the fringes of the kiln or in the shadow of other pottery, where there is no direct exposure to fire and ash and items are swathed in smoke. This effect can be artificially produced by dropping in coal and burning it. The rough texture will become smooth with use. This item is particularly representative of the Bizen style with its combination of gold and silver textures. Each item produced is unique and availability is limited.
