Toso is spiced sake served on the New Year's day to keep yearly evil away and to wish for longevity.
Since ancient times, it has been said that "if one has it, his/her family won't become ill, and if a whole family has it, all the members of the town they live in won't get sick too." The sake is an essential part of Japanese New Year's ceremony.
