"Joutai", a process in which rope is wound into the shape of a plate or bowl, then hardened by lacquer to a create a base, is rarely seen these days, but it is a process with much history. As items with "Negoro-Nuri" are used, the top, red cinnabar layer is worn down to reveal the black lacquer below, creating an interesting abstract pattern. In Japanese, this is a "Jikirou:" a pot used for serving Japanese sweets at events such as tea ceremonies.
