Shimane Prefecture, Yakumonuri Lacquerware, Wooden Folding Clock (Shinjiko Lake at Twilight)
Yakumonuri lacquerware, a traditional craft product designated by the governor of Shimane Prefecture
On Yakumonuri lacquerware, patterns are depicted with various colored lacquer, mother-of-pearl, and gold or silver powder on lacquered base material. Fine natural transparent lacquer is overlaid on it and then finished with a traditional polishing technique. As years go by, the transparent lacquer becomes clearer making the patterns more magnificent.
The scenery of the Shinjiko Lake is drawn with colored lacquer on wooden material, its surface is all coated with silver powder, kijiro lacquer is overlaid, and it is finished with a technique unique to Yakumonuri lacquerware to depict the lake at twilight.
