Aizu Papier-Mache Akabeko, Red, Size 4
Akabeko is a designated traditional craft of Fukushima Prefecture.
It's a toy made to promote local industry, and designed based on the folk tale of a red-haired bull which worked very hard to carry holy materials when Tokuitsu Daishi built Enzoji Temple in Aizu about 1,200 years ago. It petrified and became a protective god on the day the construction was completed.
After that, an epidemic broke out in Aizu. However, a family who had an Akabeko didn't get the disease so people started to use it as an amulet for prevention of disease, easy delivery of a baby, construction, business, etc. This simple, lucky papier-mache craft is a traditional folk handcraft of Aizu.
The lovely face gently sways. Perfect for a souvenir.

Okiagari-koboshi is a designated traditional craft of Fukushima Prefecture. It's the oldest craft among all Aizu folk handcrafts.
Okiagari-koboshi is said to have started approx. 400 years ago, when the feudal lord named Ujisato Gamo made retainers without official appointments produce them to sell on New Year's Day.
Even now, these are sold at the first market of the year in Aizu. An "Aizu okiagari-koboshi" symbolizes the ups and downs in life as it returns to an upright position when tipped over, and also represents health and perseverance even though it's small. There is a custom to buy one more doll than the number of family members to wish for good work, getting a new family member, or obtaining more possessions. People celebrate the New Year by displaying okiagari-koboshi on a Shinto altar for the well-being of the family. Aizu's oldest folk craft is a very auspicious one.
You can rest it on your hand as it's small. The body is colored red, and the head is black. Eyes, eyebrows, and mouth are painted with fine lines. Its lovely appearance will make you feel relaxed.
