This kind of pattern can be achieved by putting the item in a corner of the kiln or into the shadow of another item, so that it's wreathed in smoke and doesn't come in direct contact with flames or ash. It can be made artificially by putting in charcoal and then burning it. Furthermore, this pottery has very fine pores and thus slightly breathes. The water inside stays fresh and alive for a long time, as does a flower. When using it for a long time the coarse surface becomes smoother and glossy.
