This patterned finish is generated at the fringes of the kiln or in the shadow of other pottery, where there is no direct exposure to fire and ash and items are swathed in smoke. This effect can be artificially produced by dropping in coal and burning it. Due to miniscule pores and a degree of breathability, water is kept fresh allowing flowers to live for longer. The rough texture will become smooth with use.
