Aizu painted candle is a designated traditional craft of Fukushima Prefecture.
The origin of the candle comes from around 500 years ago, when the lord of Aizu at the time, Morinobu Ashina, encouraged peasants to grow a lot of lacquer trees. After that, candle production was passed down to feudal lords such as Ujisato Gamo and Masayuki Hoshina, and it became one of the local specialties of Aizu along with lacquerware.
A washi paper is wrapped in a lamp wick, and then soaked in a wax liquid dozens of times to shape it. Then, colorful patterns such as chrysanthemum, peony, or plum patterns are painted on using a paintbrush. The candle is then finished by coating it with the wax liquid again to give it gloss.
Each candle is carefully hand-made by craftsmen using traditional techniques.

The irregularly flickering candle fire will make you feel relaxed. Also, it generates negative ions effective for fatigue, lack of sleep, and stress.
This item is very high-quality and economical as it will last a long time even if you light it up many times. The beautiful pattern makes it perfect for a wedding ceremony, Buddhist ritual, Christmas, and other ceremonial occasions, or as a memento or souvenir.
It has been widely gaining popularity overseas as well ever since a distinguished English folk handcraft artist highly praised it.
