Okiagari-koboshi is a designated traditional craft of Fukushima Prefecture. It's the oldest craft among all Aizu folk handcrafts. Okiagari-koboshi is said to have started approx. 400 years ago, when the feudal lord named Ujisato Gamo made retainers without official appointments produce them to sell on New Year's Day. Even now, these are sold at the first market of the year in Aizu. An "Aizu okiagari-koboshi" symbolizes the ups and downs in life as it returns to an upright position when tipped over, and also represents health and perseverance even though it's small. There is a custom to buy one more doll than the number of family members to wish for good work, getting a new family member, or obtaining more possessions. People celebrate the New Year by displaying okiagari-koboshi on a Shinto altar for the well-being of the family. Aizu's oldest folk craft is a very auspicious one. You can rest it on your hand as it's small. The body is colored blue, and the head is black. Eyes, eyebrows, and mouth are painted with fine lines. Its lovely appearance will make you feel relaxed.
