Akabeko is a designated traditional craft of Fukushima Prefecture.
It's a toy made to promote local industry, and designed based on the folk tale of a red-haired bull which worked very hard to carry holy materials when Tokuitsu Daishi built Enzoji Temple in Aizu about 1,200 years ago. It petrified and became a protective god on the day the construction was completed.
After that, an epidemic broke out in Aizu. However, a family who had an Akabeko didn't get the disease so people started to use it as an amulet for prevention of disease, easy delivery of a baby, construction, business, etc. This simple, lucky papier-mache craft is a traditional folk handcraft of Aizu.
The lovely face gently sways. Perfect for a souvenir.
